the things we take for granted

May 28, 2013

It seems like every time I turn on the CBC I hear the song “Let Her Go” by Passenger.  It’s a good song.  But it’s the lyrics that haunt me.  The course lyrics are this:

Well you only need the light when it’s burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go

Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low
Only hate the road when you’re missin’ home
Only know you love her when you let her go

We take so much for granted.   Things like the sun and the light, as mentioned in the song.  But so many other things as well, like the great people in our lives who support us through good and bad times, an abundance of healthy food, freedom, warm houses, finances in an amount that means we get to make choices about how we spend it,  laws that protect our rights to believe what we want to believe and practice our faith in meaningful ways, the list goes on and on.  And on a daily basis we take these things for granted.  I’m not sure I think we are meant to give up all these blessings, but I do think we should be more appreciative of them and work to create a world where all people experience these same gifts and opportunities.
