“vacation mode”

September 9, 2013

So I’ve observed around my office that people approach vacations in a couple of ways.

(1) There are the people who move into vacation mode a day or so before their vacation actually starts.  In my experience these are people it is great to work for, as you can seize that moment to ask for things and they are likely to agree to whatever you ask or suggest.  Often they don’t even mind when you are blatantly obvious about your actions (even going so far as to say why you are seizing that particular moment), as they are already in vacation mode and “all is good”.

(2) There are also people who maintain vacation mode for a couple of days after they return from vacation.  These are the people whose messages on their phones are happier and more chipper on the day they come back from vacation than on their last day in the office.  They speak happily about their time off and feel unconcerned about all the things they need to catch up on.

I think both these types of people are preferable to the people whose “vacation mode” doesn’t appear to seep into their work life on either side.
