We all want to feel like we are a part of something.  We want to know we belong.  Most of us are blessed to be part of great families, have a circle (or two) of fantastic friends, and have found other communities where we belong like our place of worship or workplace.  But what does it take to actually feel like you are a part of these groups or communities?

Belonging from my perspective is rooted in relationships.  It’s about conversations and shared stories.  It’s about shared experiences and moments.  Sometimes these conversations, stories, experiences and moments just happen.  But we create a stronger sense of belonging for ourselves and others when we try a little hard to have conversations, experiences and moments.  When we put a little bit more effort into connecting with others and building relationships the rewards are exponential.

We all want to belong and be a part of something.  The good news is that we can do things and take steps to make this a greater reality for ourselves and others.

  1. I just finished ‘Daring Greatly’ by Brene Brown. She has some great thoughts on belonging vs. Fitting in. But I’m busy colouring and doing puzzles, so other than reading the blog and noting this as a reference, I don’t have any more time. =). Gotta go.
