Shakespeare – Oh how wise

February 6, 2014

“The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves. “

This is a quote from Julius Caesar.  No, Shakespeare is not on my current reading list, although I did read that play in high school.  This quote was referenced in a different book I recently finished.

Just as I recently wrote that how we see ourselves impacts how we the world; similarly we have a lot of ability to influence what happens to us.  No we can’t control everything and no we not everything that happens to us is the result of something we did.   But to assume that everything in life is a result of fate or is predetermined in the stars, isn’t correct either.  Each day we have so many choices.

I didn’t go check the context in which Julius Caesar made this statement, but from what I remember of the play, it’s clear the he too knew that people influence the outcomes of their lives.   So don’t sit around waiting for life to happen and them blame the “stars”, rather make the choices and take the action required to have the life you want.

PS for those of you interested the book is The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
