two ways to listen

I frequently find myself reminding others that we can ‘listen’ to people in two ways.  We tend to rely on listening to what people say with words.   We count on people to actually tell us what they want, what they think, what they need, how they feel, ….  But the truth is that people tell us much more with their actions.  We can be far more effective in our listening if we listen to what people do.  People’s actions or lack of actions indicate what is really important to them.  People’s behaviours and facial expressions provide much insight.  And when people’s words and actions are in contradiction – it’s their actions we need to take note of.   Actions are far louder than words.
