Surreal

November 15, 2014

Surreal. That is the only word I can think of to describe seeing the polar bears in Churchill this week. I can imagine it would be similar to the experience of going on safari in Africa, where you are out with all the animals. It is different than the zoo where animals are in a confined space. Out on the tundra the polar bears do what the polar bears want to do. They curl into the snow and sleep, they wrestle with each other, they sniff at and climb under the tundra buggies, the pounce through the ice and eat seaweed, and when they want they wander off usually in the direction of the bay. And then, at least on a good day, you drive a few feet or look the other way and there is another one, doing whatever it is going to do. Surreal.
