hiking – year 2

February 21, 2015

Last year at this time, the idea of hiking the Bruce Trail was just an goal.  We hadn’t started, we didn’t really have a clue what it would be like, I’m not even sure we owned the guidebook.

Heading into year 2 things are very different.  Weeks ago we booked the first hiking weekend into our calendars for April.  And yesterday as we tried on packs at MEC, we weren’t guessing at how big a pack we need or how much stuff we might be carrying with us, because we know.  At the same time we realized that perhaps our hiking experience could be improved with some better gear.

Last year we were excited, but also apprehensive given that we were not entirely sure we could do this.  This year, it seems like just excited and joy.  We are becoming hikers (not just saying it, as part of our desire to appear more outdoorsy).  We have knowledge and experience and it feels good.  When we read a book like “Wild” we can relate to parts of it, while at the same time knowing that we aren’t interested in trying something similar to the author.

I can’t wait for the snow to melt, to put on my new hiking pants, to get out on the trail, to realize I should have bought a new pack after all (which I’m sure is bound to happen), and to see what the Bruce Trail holds for us in 2015.  We have even tossed around the idea of being a less of “fair weather” hikers and going even if it rains; but time will tell how that plays out.  🙂
