wisdom from the trail – being tough

June 13, 2015

Several months ago, I wrote a blog entitled “wisdom of the trail“.    It was a bit naive of me to think the Bruce Trail would only impart one piece of wisdom.  While hiking last weekend, we realized that there is so much wisdom we are learning from and while on the trail.  In fact, Linda suggested perhaps at the end we will have a books worth.  I’m not sure about that, but at a minimum, I will have several blog posts with that title.

Today’s wisdom from the trail is about being tough.  “You don’t have to be tough every day; some days are just nice.”

Last Friday we were tough hikers and the most outdoorsy people we knew (again on that day).  We felt tough because we had done our first hike in the rain.  And as I think I already said, we did this with minimal whining or complaining and all in all it went very well.  On Saturday we didn’t encounter any of these types of challenges.  The bugs weren’t too bad, the trail was often flat and wide, most of the inclines were manageable, it wasn’t too hot, it wasn’t too cold.  It was a nice day of hiking.

This experience was a great reminder that in life you don’t have to be tough every day, some days are just nice.  Friday we were tough.  Saturday was nice.  That’s what life is about.  Sometimes digging in and getting though tough things.  Other times it’s about enjoying that things are going along nicely and there is no need to be tough, but to just enjoy.  “You don’t have to be tough every day; some days are just nice.
