holidays = life

December 30, 2015

I recently heard some say that the holidays are a good parallel to life.  In that as a culture we put a lot of hope and expectation into the holidays.  Wanting everyone to be happy, wanting everything to be perfect, imaging Hallmark movie moments.  As we all know, these are unrealistic expectations.  The comparison to live, is that we tend to think that life should be easy, that we will always be happy, that there will be Hallmark movie moments.   And again, these are unrealistic expectations.

But this isn’t to say that the holiday and life aren’t good and even great for that matter.  But rather that we would all benefit from changing our expectations.  We would benefit from showing ourselves and each other more grace.  Of being okay when all is not perfect, with a bit messed up being “normal”, with remembering that the only place there are Hallmark movie moments are in the Hallmark movies.

Most of us, during the holidays and in life, are surrounded and supported by great friends and family who while not perfect are there for us when we need them.  We are lucky to live in a place where we have more than enough food and things both over Christmas and in our lives.

In so many ways, how are lives are during the Christmas holidays is how our lives are all year round and over our lifetime.  And really that’s not so bad.
