our lives are a story

November 19, 2018

Last Friday I attended a workshop on narrative, basically the idea that our lives are stories.  I thought I’d pass along a few of the quotes that were shared that day.  Ponder, apply, and/or share them as you find relevant for you.

” We life immersed in narrative, recounting and reassessing the meaning of our past actions, anticipating the outcomes of future projects, situating ourselves at the intersection of several stories, not yet completed.  We are in the middle of our stories and cannot me sure how they will end; we are constantly have to revise the plots as new events are added to our lives. ” – Donald Polkinghorne –

“The week has been too full. There has been too much experience, and too little time to sort it all out, too little time between one things and another. … The deeper the experience, the more time is required to sort it out.” – May Sarton –

“When you are in the middle of the story it isn’t a story at all, but only a confusion; a dark roaring, a blindness, a wreckage of shattered glass and splintered wood; like a house in a whirlwind… It’s only afterwards that it becomes anything like a story at all, when you’re telling it, to yourself or to someone else.” – Margaret Atwood (Alias Grace) –
