you have to be you

December 21, 2018

This week I was reminded that in order to be effective in anything we are doing, we need to be ourselves.  We can’t try to be someone else or do things the way someone else does things.  Each of us unique and as a result each of our paths, our approaches, our ways to get to the outcome, will be unique.

When embarking on something new or something we haven’t done before, we often learn from or observe others doing that activity or ask others how they do something.  And don’t get me wrong, this is a great way to learn about something.  But when that new thing doesn’t go perfectly the first few times, it’s can be a false conclusion to decide you aren’t good at it and shouldn’t do it.  I think in many cases, it’s not that we can’t do that task or the activity, but that we are still trying to do that thing someone else’s way, instead of being ourselves and tweaking things to reflect our unique way of doing things and being effective.

Lack of perfect success in something may not be lack of competence, but instead may mean you need to figure out how you can be you to achieve the outcome you are striving for.
