On Friday night I attended a speaking event where a number of woman shared their stories and experiences.  People’s stories include both pain and joy, challenges and learning, reflection and insight.

One of the speakers reminded us that if parts of people’s stories made us uncomfortable (for whatever reason), we should be okay with that.  We need to sit with and embrace the things that make us uncomfortable, as it is only though being uncomfortable that we become aware of other peoples experiences.  It is in the uncomfortableness that we increase our understanding, expand out world view, are better able to express empathy.

Life is full of uncomfortable moments.  Some times we are uncomfortable ourselves, sometimes we feel uncomfortable for others (although I’m going to suggest that even when we think we are feeling uncomfortable on behalf of someone else, that at the root that is really our own discomfort as well).  Perhaps we shouldn’t be trying to hard to eliminate the uncomfortable moments, but instead learn how to walk with each other during them.
